Who We Are

Salish Sea Expeditions is a recognized leader in science and environmental education in the Puget Sound region. Our programs impel 5th to 12th grade students to design and conduct original scientific research while engaged in a shared adventure on the waters and watersheds of the Salish Sea. Our programs foster scientific literacy, critical thinking and increased stewardship. At least 75% of our students attend public schools and at least 25% come from schools that are traditionally underserved.

What We Do

Salish Sea Expeditions' mission is to inspire students to develop critical thinking and creativity through student-led scientific research on Puget Sound. Salish Sea Expeditions was founded in 1994. The Salish leadership spent two years gathering input and feedback from the region's science teachers to learn what was needed, before launching, in 1996, the first of our innovative science-under-sail programs. In 2009, with funding from NOAA, we launched Sound & Source, a program enhancement that adds a watershed research component to our successful Sea Investigators boat-based program. As of 2015, over 12,000 students have participated in our programs.
