Who We Are

The Bremerton Backpack Brigade is licensed 501(c)3 non-profit.  We are endorsed by the Bremerton School District, governed by a Board of Directors, supported by local businesses & civic organizations, as well as many individuals. Our team is comprised solely of volunteers committed to helping fight food insecurities in the Bremerton community.

Children have more difficulty learning when they are hungry, additionally they are sick more frequently when proper nutrition is not a part of their daily routine. Our volunteers and community partners working together are making a difference in the lives of hungry children in Bremerton, one backpack of food at a time, allowing these children to come to school on Monday morning without the burden of hunger, ready to learn and thrive.

What We Do

At the Bremerton Backpack Brigade, our mission is to nourish the future by ensuring that no child goes hungry, even when they leave the school doors behind. Through our innovative program, we send backpacks filled with nutritious food home with kids every weekend during the school year, helping to ensure they arrive to school on Monday morning ready to learn.

Our weekly backpacks of food are specifically created for the family that will receive it.  We take into account the number of children living in the home, any food allergies or dietary restrictions as well as what cooking facilities they have available.

The Bremerton Backpack Brigade is a community effort.  We are a completely volunteer organization- we pay no salaries and the Bremerton School District donates space for our operations.  Food drives throughout the community provide approximately 35% of the non-perishable foods that we send home.  The other 65% of food sent home (including fresh produce) is purchased with dollars donated from our community supporters.
