KACE helps adults improve their reading, writing and math, learn English as a Second Language (ESL) and prepare for the GED exam in a supportive, nonjudgmental setting. Our goal is to enable our students to participate in their community, increase their capacity to be self-sufficient, break the cycle of illiteracy in their family, and/or meet their educational or vocational goals. The core of our program remains one-on-one tutoring, but in recent years we have expanded our offerings in response to changing community needs. We now offer individualized GED preparation classes, English language/civics education, ESL conversation groups, intensive reading classes, and workplace literacy. We are the only Kitsap County entity providing free one-on-one GED instruction and ESL classes in remote locations.
What We Do
Kitsap Adult Center for Education (KACE) is a community based, non-profit agency whose mission is to provide adult educational opportunities that will improve the lives of students and the community. KACE was begun in 1979 by an employee at the Department of Social and Health Services who wanted to help welfare clients who had difficulty filling out and reading forms. For many years it was run by a group of dedicated volunteers who provided one-on-one tutoring for English as a Second Language (ESL) and native English speaking adults. Until 1986, services were provided entirely by volunteers. Since then, we have contracted with the state annually for various services and obtained funding from a variety of sources. We changed our name in 2011 from ?Literacy Council of Kitsap? to reflect the broad range of educational and transitional services we provide over and above basic literacy tutoring.
