Who We Are

Life in a nursing home is a lot better when we have a friend! Many residents feel lonely and isolated due to a variety of issues including poor health, loss of significant relationships, aging, low self-esteem, etc. A friend makes us feel worthy, that we are important enough to spend time with. Volunteers are asked to visit ONE resident, a couple times a month at their convenience, for a year. Visits are simple. You find what you have in common and become friends - just like you do with any friend! All volunteers are matched close to home. An orientation is given and a background check is mandatory in all facilities in Washington State. Some facilities require a TB test. Spouses, children, friends (and usually pets) may accompany the volunteer.

What We Do

""Nationally, 6 out of 10 residents in nursing homes never have a visitor." Friend to Friend recruits and matches volunteers to visit one-on-one with residents who seldom or never have visitors. Friend to Friend America: 1) recruits and matches volunteers throughout the Puget Sound WA area; 2) initiates new programs around the USA and Canada. Since 1974, more than 16,000 elderly and disabled residents and volunteers around Puget Sound have formed relationships that would not have otherwise happened. Many cities around the country have had Friend to Friend programs (although many name changes) started by concerned citizens. In 2012, FTF-Greater Seattle celebrated its 38th anniversary and FTF-Greater Spokane celebrates its 33 year anniversary! It is successful due to our volunteers and donors and the good Lord!
